Goals and Purpose of the Meeting:
The Major Research Equipment Facility Construction (MREFC) package consists of two sections:
1) Construction of the facility
2) Construction of the infrastructure of the experiments making up the Initial Suite of Experiments (ISE)
The primary goals for this meeting are:
A) Develop and/or refine the collaborations supporting experiments that can be included in the ISE.
Each of the experiments will be held to the same requirements as the facility and include:
Strong science case for each of the experiments
Bottoms-up cost estimate for the construction of the experiment
Work Breakdown Structure (WBS)
Hazards Assessment and an accompanying Mitigation Plan
Evidence of coordination with the facility
Identification of timelines for the experiment
Identification of information needed by the experimental collaborations needed to complete their work
Description of the assistance needed to complete the assembly of collaborations that are not as well defined
B) Allow the facility to demonstrate its progress, timelines, and opportunities
C) Provide an opportunity for new collaborations to form and for individuals not already associated with experimental collaborations to forge contacts
D) It is anticipated that an S-4 solicitation will be issued in the near future to support the preparations for experiments to take their place in the ISE. This meeting will provide guidance and assistance in preparing responses to this solicitation.
These efforts represent considerable engineering and project work, and this meeting will assist in the coordination of the experimental collaborations.
Outcomes
Ideally, each of the experimental groups will be able to prepare a roadmap for achieving the documentation necessary to successfully become part of the ISE.
In some circumstances, groups that have had more time for development of their programs may make considerable progress in preparing their input. Groups are encouraged to prepare in advance of the meeting to allow the time allotted to be used most effectively.
